1. Wrong Class of Grass
Often times, the biggest problem you might have with grass is that it just doesn’t look right. Since it is typically permanent, the type of turfgrass is the most important decision you will make when renovating or installing your lawn. Your concerns should be pointed not only toward the physical appearance of the grass, but also at the grass’ compatibility with the Indiana climate. Due to the temperature, soil composition and weather patterns of Indiana, only certain species of grass are able to thrive; they include:
- Kentucky Bluegrass
- Fine Fescue
- Tall Fescue
- Perennial Ryegrass
These grasses are all able to grow lush, beautiful lawns in Indiana. If possible, avoid clumping different grasses together. When grown together, over time, the grasses can create unsightly patches in your lawn.
Zoysia Grass, Annual Bluegrass, Annual Ryegrass, and any warm season grasses are not suggested for use in your Indiana lawn and should not be considered.
2. Sticking to the Schedule
For a lawn to look its best, it is essential for its maintenance to be done correctly and on time. A healthy lawn needs fertilization, aeration and pest control to be as beautiful as possible, and when these procedures go undone or are done at incorrect times of year, your lawn’s appearance can suffer.
When preparing for your lawn’s maintenance, consider this schedule:
- Best time to control weeds: Spring (you may also want to treat for crabgrass with pre-emergent in early March/April)
- Best time to control pests like grubs: Early Summer (June/July)
- Best time to aerate: Fall
- Best time to fertilize: Late Fall
The two most common weeds that pop up in Indiana are crabgrass and dandelions. Both grow in patches and seem to come back year after year. Additionally, ground ivy is a fairly common weed that is difficult to control. As resilient pests that are challenging to combat, the best method of controlling these weeds is with a pre-emergent treatment to stop them from sprouting all together. Other types of broadleaf weeds that may appear in your yard are generally easy to control with an effective herbicide on a one-by-one basis.
While not all insects are harmful to your lawn, certain species can wreak serious havoc on your grass. Grubs, the larval stage of many beetles, account for more than $234 million in damages to lawns each year. With each female beetle laying as many as 60 eggs, grubs can make quick work of any green lawn. Another notorious pest to Indiana lawns in the chinch bug. When chinch bugs feed below the surface of your yard, they block the grass from getting food and water, causing large yellow and brown spots to form. The best way to combat insect infestation is to apply a method of control in early summer, just after spring.
